Input Hot Key Setting Glitch

Hello,

Under Setting>Time & Language> Keyboard> Input language hot keys, there is the option to assign keys to each input language, in addition to the simple toggle. (e.g. Left Alt + Shift + 2 switches to Japanese)

For whatever reason, it only saved my setting for 2 of my input languages, but not English. I would assign English input as "1", use the computer for a while, only to find that the setting was gone (no hot keys assigned at all).

I assigned it again, but it didn't take long for the setting to disappear again. The strange thing is that my other two input languages (Alt+Shift + 2 and Alt + Shift + 3 didn't lose their setting.

Is this an known issue? How can I fix it?

Thank you.

Actually, resetting Windows 10 did NOT solve the problem at all. It still persisted.

Update: For some reason, changing the setting for "Override for default input method" from English to "Use language list" seem to have solved the problem and brought my hot key assignment back (as in it reappeared on its own)

Update 2: NEVER MIND it's still broken. The problem only fixes it self when I change the "Override for default input method" setting, and it doesn't seem to matter what I change... as long as I change something. As soon as I do, the previous hot key setting magically reappears. Until next time it stops working, that is.

At this point I am going to say it is Microsoft's responsibility, and any further effort to fix it for them with some kind of hack is beyond my ability as a consumer....

Hello, Thank you for your response, fast, very detailed and helpful. Basically I tried safe mode, which mysteriously remembered my previous assignment of keys, including English. It, however, disappeared again as soon as I booted normally. Obviously I can't simply leave it in safe mode during normal use. This also to me means something is wrong beyond what is reasonably fixable without diving deep into it? I checked the region settings, etc. and all seemed well, so at the end I simply reset Windows 10. By the way, do you think the problem is caused by the user/me or was it really a glitch in the system? Once again, thank you for your help!

Good day! I'm Raniel. I understand your frustration regarding this issue and I'll do my best to help.

Just to clarify, did you make any changes to your machine before encountering this issue (like installing third party apps, recent updates, etc..)? Do you also encounter the issue when you access your account via safe mode?. Please see the steps under "From the sign-in screen": https://support.microsoft.com/help/12376/window...

Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language > and double-check your preferred language under "Windows display language" > click on it and go to Options > ensure that you keyboard is also set to your preferred language. You may remove the other keyboards to isolate the issue as well.

Once done, go to Control Panel > Clock and Region > Administrative , then verify the system locale under the settings for "Welcome screen and new user accounts" as well as "Language for non-Unicode programs". You may also go to the "Formats" tab and change it based on your preferred display language.

Reboot your machine and check again.

Another option is to enable the built-in administrator account to isolate the issue

    1. On the Windows sign-in screen, press and hold the Shift key, then select Power > Restart
    2. After your machine reboots, click on "Troubleshoot" under Choose an option
    3. Click on "Advanced options" > select "command prompt"
    4. On the command prompt window, type net user administrator /active:yes and press Enter
    5. Reboot your machine, then login to the built-in admin account, and check if you'll encounter the same issue.

Note: If you don't encounter the issue on the built-in administrator account, I suggest that you create a new user account (go through the steps under "My computer is in a workgroup") . Please refer to this article as a guide: https://support.microsoft.com/help/14039/window...

I hope this helps. Good luck!
