Windows update error code 0x80080005

Hey,

As per the title, whenever I try updating windows I get an error.

So far I've tried every step in this guide: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-update-error-0x80080005 but to no effect. the troubleshooter does not detect any problems, I have deactivated any thrid party anti-virus/malware program and deactivated windows defender/firewal. I tried to run cmd.exe /c takeown /f "C:\System Volume Information\" /R /D Y && icacls "C:\System Volume Information\" /grant:R SYSTEM:F /T /C /L, which again didn't make any noticeable difference. (this returned successful except for 'failed processing 4 files'.

It may be worth mentioning that while going through the last step (Reset SoftwareDistribution & Catroot2 folders), net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, and net stop msiserver returned an error, error, and '... was not running' respectively.  when restarting these, net start wuauserv returned 'error code 2'. I am however reciting from memory as messing with the command prompt does make me nervous and the fact it didn't go smoothly makes me reluctant to just try again.

I am running windows 10 pro version 2004. just in case: OS build: 19041.329, experience: Windows feature experience pack 120.2202.130.0.

Feel free to ask any additional info required.

Thanks in advance,

Jan

**Few things to check on the PC

    1. Important: Back up your personal data and files to an external hard drive, USB thumb drive, or cloud location (such as OneDrive).
    2. Ensure you are signed in or have administrator rights to do a repair install
    3. Unplug all external peripherals except for the Mouse, Keyboard, and LAN cable before starting
    4. Disable or uninstall any 3rd party Anti-Virus program to prevent it from interfering with the upgrade

Kindly try to use the media creation tool.

Download the media creation tool and save it to your computer.

Open the tool and select Upgrade this PC now.

Make sure to select Keep personal files and apps.

It might take some time to install Windows 10. Your computer will restart a few times, Make sure you don’t turn off your PC.
