Audio device detection

I have a an issue when I plug in my headset.  The windows system / realtek (r) Audio driver does not see the microphone.  It shows up as headphones and there is no option to identify it as a head set.  Previously on my old (Windows 10) laptop a popup used to appear to ask what device was plugged in or, I could access through device manager  / control panel.  I cannot find the realtek manager anymore or find any way to make either windows or the realtek driver recognise that the device is a headset with microphone and not a headphone.  Can you help?

Current Realtek driver is version 6.0.8960.1

    Thanks for the reply Ana.

The socket on the laptop is a single 3.5mm TRRS standard headset / headphone socket.  The laptop is a new Dell Latitude 5500 series with the latest windows 10 updates.  The Realtek (R) Audio drivers are the most recent update available.

The inbuilt laptop microphone is working.  The headset and microphone work on other devices.

My problem is that the headset, and its microphone, are not recognised properly by the system.  The Realtek driver seems to have identified the headset as a headphone and there doesn't seem to be any way to correct this.  Previously when a device was plugged in Realtek generated a popup to ask what the device was.  This no longer happens.  The audio manager previously allowed the user to correct the identification of a device.  This facility seems to be missing as well in the latest update.

Is there a work around to get the popup to appear - not ideal but would at least address the immediate issue - or to get the audio interface manager?  I realise these may be Realtek driver issues

If it is not a bother for you, I would like you to send a screenshot from the audio manager, remember to connect the headphones.

Hi Pat, I am an independent advisor.

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

I will do my best to help you.

You must identify how many jacks the headphones have, most of them include two jacks that should identify the microphone and the connection on the PC.

You can try to update the audio drivers from the device manager, also from the Audio Manager a window opens showing if there is a microphone available. In some cases, notebooks include a built-in microphone.

    Regards.
