I have a HP DV9700 laptop. Original OS was Vista, upgraded to & and then to 10. All has been fine until update 190#. After update my screen was unviewable for vertical color lines. Thought at first a virus but after extensive effort with no success I reinstalled my windows 10 to original version from my upgrade disk and all was fine until it updated automatically to latest version 190? and problem was back. Worked fine with V180# but doesn't like V190#. I have reinstalled win7 and it is fine now but would like to update to a working version of win10 and prevent further updating to problem version.

Thanks for the information. I was hoping someone could tell me how to stop win10 from updating. I can reinstall older version but I can't turn off the auto-updating.
How can I do this?
Russ

Hi Russ,
I'm Independent Advisor not Microsoft employee or support person. But I'm in contact with Windows developers since 1995 - as a one of the best Windows beta-testers till 2009 when program was closed, as an MVP in 2005-2017 including Windows System & Performance nomination. So I have deep enough Windows knowledge and you may trust me. It's a pleasure for me to help others and I'll do all my best to help you.
Seems your laptop is not compatible with Windows 10. Old PCs without official Windows 10 support may work fine until certain Windows version but cannot accept that new one.
Personally I have laptop (2005 year) working fine with 1703 but 1709 installation failed. And my desktop (2009) works fine with 1709 but cannot boot with 1803 or later version.
It is very likely your laptop just is not compatible with new Windows 10 versions so you is compelled to use 1809 till the laptop's death.
In theory you may try to find an enthusiast to create patch for your BIOS but it is not simple task and new laptop may be cheaper.
Sorry for bad news, but the number of old PCs stopped working with new major update increases rapidly enough.
