Windows LAN computer credentials

Hello,

I don't understand how Windows behaves with LAN credentials.

When accessing a local computer (called "SRV") from a "Client" PC, I'm asked to enter the credentials of a local account of SRV. That's OK.

Once entered, those credentials are saved somewhere in Windows in the Client PC, but I don't know where. It saves them even if I don't tick the "Save password" box.

On the "client" computer:

  1. Credential manager shows nothing, no credentials saved.
  2. net use * /d says "The list is empty" on Client PC.
  3. Log off/log on or restart done on the both machines: same
  4. Disabling/enabling the "Network discovery" on both machines: same
  5. Removing the local account which is used to access SRV from Client: same, I'm still capable of accessing SRV from Client!

Where are stored the credentials and how to make Windows "forget" them on the Client PC?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Kind regards.

When setting up a share connection then you need to pay attention to the various options:

  • Reconnect at sign-in:

  • Remember my credentials:

If you did not pay attention to these details then you must disconnect your existing connections:

then restore them, possibly using different credentials.

The share password is probably stored in the SAM registry file which is inaccessible to you.

Thanks a lot for your answer.

In my case it was something I didn't expect: all the credentials of the "SRV" machine were constantly synchronised with the "Client" machine as soon as it connected to it. (for eg., I had some Chromecast and other stuff credentials to which Client PC were never connected (fresh installation of OS)).

So even when I cleaned up the "Client" credentials, it keeped connecting to the "SRV" whithout asking anything, but as soon as I cleaned the credentials of SRV, it worked instantly on the "Client": it started asking me for credentials.
