    Start at the beginning,

Home build, assembled on 13 11 2020.    Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite MB Rev 1.0       Ryzen 7 3700x cpu    32 Gb  corsair ram      Saphire RX 580 graphics      Samsung 980 ssd

    Win 10 pro  2004 build 19041.685   V20H2

    Updates:  2020-12  KB4592438         2020-10  KB4580325       2020-12  KB4592438     2020-10  KB4584229     2020-11  KB4586781

    20 Updates to Defender.

    2020-11  KB4586876  KB4580419    KB4586876

Same result for dvd or cd.  When you have "this pc" open the icon  changes when you insert a disc, the dvd and image of a disc gets bigger, and if its a cd the icon changes to cd.

If I plug in an external usb drive, it reads and displays as it should. I used this to re install the drivers from the motherboard dvd, no change.  Device manager indicates al ok, no warnings. No error codes are displayed, just a little box that says   Please insert disc.

Good luck !  I'm going to investigate the registry, but I would have thought repair install would have fixed any problems there.

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you are unable to use any DVD on your computer. I’ll certainly assist you with the issue.

    However, please let us know:

    1.     When you say “Machine then updated, no dvd's recognized”, may I know the update that was installed? To check go to Start >> Settings >> Update & Security >> Windows Update >> View update history.

    2.     Do you receive the same error message when you enter a DVD/CD?

    3.     Are you able to access the same DVD in any other computer?

    4.     What is the make and model of the computer?

    5.     Which build version of Windows 10 is installed on the computer? Refer Which version of Windows operating system am I running?

You may want to refer the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the article Your CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows or other programs except method 1 and see if that helps.

**Note:**Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

Follow the steps to take backup of registry.

Also, I would recommend you to Create a system restore point.

If you are not conformable in accessing BIOS settings, you may want to get in touch with the computer manufacturer.

NoteModifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Let us know how it goes.

In the BIOS, under Boot, you can enable / disable fast boot. You can also select ultra fast boot. That was selected, when changed back to fast boot dvd and cd discs work again.  Every day is a schoolday, you learn something.

Thank you for your time Nikhar.
