Cannot install KB4592438

Hi,

KB4592438 will not install on my system. From Windows Update, it fails every time.

I have tried deleting everything in C:->Windows->SoftwareDistribution->Download; running several command line fixes that were supposedly helpful in a similar thread; ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter; tried downloading the KB direct from the Microsoft Update Catalog; and of course, tried restarting my PC.

The MS page for this KB says to make sure the Servicing Stack Update is installed and I have confirmed that it is.

What else could be at play for why this will not successfully install?

    Try:

Right click on start & choose powershell with admin & enter:

    SFC /SCANNOW

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    Can other updates download fine?

If you’re running Defender check that the definitions are installing.

    Is Windows activated?

You can also try the windows update minitool to update Windows:

    Hi Virginia,

    Thanks for your response!

    Edition    Windows 10 Pro

    Version    20H2

    Installed on    ‎10/‎27/‎2020

    OS build    19042.572

Experience    Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.31.0

The message I receive is "Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x8007000d)"

I am not running any third party antivirus that would interfere with the download.

    Thank you!

Hello, I’m Virginia an independent advisor with 20 years of expertise in fixing my own & friends’ PC problems.

    Which Windows 10 build are you running - 1903, 1909, 2004 or 20H2 (Oct 2020)?

The usual reason why updates wont install is that it already is installed. Have you checked to ensure this isn’t the case?

What is the error message when it fails?

Are you running any third party antivirus software which may be preventing the download?

Other updates work fine. Defender updated earlier today and some driver updates via Windows Update also successfully installed in the last couple days.

These are the same commands I found earlier. I ran them through command prompt as an admin, rather than powershell. Running through powershell:

    • SCANNOW found corrupted files and repaired them
    • StartComponentCleanup completed successfully
    • RestoreHealth completed successfully

    Windows is indeed activated.

The minitool found two updates other than this; one was for Silverlight and the other was a Defender definitions files; both of these updated successfully. After running the above commands in powershell, the problematic update was over 100GB and still failed.

    Thank you!
