Files not opening

HI, I have tried unsuccessfully to get this issue sorted out, but it seems to hard for everyone.

I previously had the full Office installed on my computer, but bought a new one and was sole Office Home and Student 2019, which installed all ok.

However it did not have Outlook with it.

Many files could not be accessed and after a Tech looked at it, he said that these files, under my old computer were created having the full suite of Office and if I purchased Outlook, all would be solved.

I purchase Outlook from Microsoft, and the sales person assured me all files would open as it would recognize them as created by them. I use GoogleMail and these files received were filed by me (However, all new files wont open anyway.)

Running Windows latest with all updates installed.

Any joy here please?

I am reluctant to update the full suit of Office for nothing after they promised success.

    Hi Teddyboyfromoz -

    I'm Kevin B. Independent advisor and a Windows user like you. I do apologize for the inconvenience that you experiencing right now, let me help you sort things out.

    Microsoft Office Home and Student does not include Microsoft Outlook as the product only have Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

    What is the file extension of the files that you're trying to open? What is the error message when you try to open them?

    You can try settings the default program to open those files and check if it will work.

    Open the Settings by pressing the Windows Key + I

    Click on Apps

    On the Left pane menu, click on Default apps

    Under default app, make sure that email is set to Outlook

    Scroll down below it and click on Choose default apps by file type

    On the left pane menu, locate the file extension of your file

    Click on the app icon on the right part or Choose a default

    Locate Microsoft Outlook and select it

    Close the settings and check if the files will open

    Hope this will help and have a bless day!

    Hi Teddyboyfromoz -

    Thanks for the response and I'm glad to know that we're making progress.

    As for Chrome HTML, the default app that could open the HTML files are browsers like Google Chrome. Have you tried changing the default app for HTML to open using Chrome?

    Open the Settings

    Go to Apps

    On the left pane menu, click on Default Apps

    Scroll down and click on choose default app by file types

    On the left pane, locate the .HTML extension

    Click on the default app that is set and select your desired application to open HTML

    Close the settings and try to open any Chrome HTML files

    Regards,

    Kevin B.

    HI, Again I thank you for your assistance.

    I went to Apps, default mail, and only saw MAIL. Chose Option, showed Mail, Google Edge and offered to look up an App, saw Outlook, and installed it. DEFAULT is now Outlook.

    First stage completed.

    Pressing appwiz.cpl now shows Outlook installed, previously nothing.

    The below all completed, which took a bit of time

    * sfc /scannow

    * DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    * DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    Computer restarted

    Word files open ok, as Jpeg and JPG

    Chrome HTML and MSG are a no go.

    We are moving in the right direction at least

    Kind regards

    Hi Teddyboyfromoz -

    Thanks for the response.

    What is the default email client set on email under default app? What are the options listed when you click on the default app?

    Can you check if the Microsoft Outlook is installed under programs and features.

    Open the run box by pressing the windows key + r then type appwiz.cpl then press enter

    List of installed apps will be displayed, please check if you can see Microsoft Outlook on the list since it was installed as a standalone software.

    Also, please run a system file checker to verify the integrity of windows system files on your computer making sure that there are no corrupted files on your windows.

    Perform SFC Scan and Repair Windows Image

    -This process will perform scan for any corrupted system files or integrity violation and will attempt to repair it along with the Windows Image.

    1. Open command prompt with administrator access
    2. Type each command below and wait until scan is completed.

    * sfc /scannow

    * DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    * DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    * DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    Quick note: While the command is running, it's expected to see the process stuck at 20 or 40 percent. After a few minutes, the process will complete successfully.

    Once you complete the steps, the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool will connect to the Windows Update servers to download and replace any damaged files in the local image for Windows 10 as necessary.

    1. Close the command prompt.

    Regards,

    Kevin B.
