3080 Performance

Hi! I have recently bought a 3080 Vision, but I dont think I am getting the full performance out of the card.

Here are my current specs:

3080 vision

R7 3700x (AIO)

16GB 2666 OC to 3000Mhz

X570 prime

750W PSU

I upgraded from a 2070 and I only got 10ish more fps with the 3080 than my 2070

I have reinstalled Windows to see if it would help but it has not.

I have the latest drivers for everything but I feel like something is bottlenecking my system and I am not sure what.

For example, here is a video of Rust at Max settings on a 3080:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FblY\_1l8M0k

He is getting 120+ FPS on max settings, where I am only getting between 70-80 FPS on max settings.

Here is a screenshot of Task manager while in rust. As you can see, the CPU is at 40% and the GPU is at 50%.

I have set the Nvidia control panel to prefer max settigns but it makes no difference to the usage.

Is my card not working hard enough or is it something else?

I did notice that I get 90 FPS in Rust at low settings, but 80ish at Max. Which suggest that the GPU is not the bottleneck?

Is my CPU under performing or is it the RAM speeds, not enough wattage form PSU or a Windows setting I am missing.

I contact Nvidia support but they where less than helpful.

Any advise would be great!

I have this exact same issue. My specs:

    i9 9900K @ 5GHz

    3080 FTW3 @ 2100MHz

    32GB RAM @ 3600MHz

    1TB NVMe SN750

...and I get 60-80-100ish FPS in Rust, which is absurd. No idea what the problem is. I've reinstalled Rust, updated drivers (and properly cleaning with DDU), including the latest 461.09 driver, all to no avail whatsoever.

    Any ideas?

As one of the lucky relatively few who have managed to score an 3080 before they ran out of stock (or have they come back

in the USofA ?), you may want to post on the Nvidia forums. There are probably more people there who have experience

    with the new gpu's.

"I only got 10ish more fps with the 3080 than my 2070"

    • When running RUST ? If not ... Apples and Oranges. RUST may not be well optimized, and the 2070 is still a great performer.

A big part of the difference between the two is RTX performance.

It doesn't look like there is a bottleneck though. If there were a bottleneck you would see something more like 90+% cpu use

with 50% use on the gpu.

Having said that, 40% cpu with 50% gpu is a bit unusual. The gpu is normally hitting on or near 100% in games

    that use 40+%  cpu.

Things such as flight sims and similar games that do a lot of calculations tend to be a bit more cpu intensive,

but I wouldn't think RUST is in that group.

    • I see the game is using just under 8GB VRAM so would guess your are running with a very high resolution. I believe this would generally

also tend to push gpu use over 50%, but I can't verify as I don't often check VRAM use.

    • The system RAM use is also pretty high at 12GB, so if you have other stuff running in the background that may be

    reducing performance.

"I did notice that I get 90 FPS in Rust at low settings, but 80ish at Max."

    • When you use all low settings there is potential for pushing more processing onto the cpu, so you do want to

push graphics settings as high as possible to avoid creating an artificial bottleneck. This would be more common

when using a lower end gpu though.

If the game was not using more than say, 60\70% gpu with the 2070, then 50% gpu with the 3080 may be about right.

    • If the power supply were not adequate the game would crash, or your system 'randomly' reboot.
    • Assuming you have the correct RAM for your motherboard there should be no need to mess with speeds.

Using the motherboards default speed offers the best stability, but if you don't have stability issues with games

while using XMP settings, go for it.

drivers are slightly better lately but 461.09 is the latest offering

grab DDU and clean up the drivers and try 461.09 fresh
