Dialog boxes will not open

I'm using Windows 10 on an ASUS VivoBook. Sometime in the past few months, dialog boxes for Snip & Sketch and the HP Smart app have stopped working. When I click save on either of these apps, instead of a dialog box coming up for me to rename the file and choose where to save it, the screen flashes and reverts to exactly what I was looking at before. Perhaps the image or pdf is saved somewhere in the bowels of my temp folders? But I can't say for sure. There is no way for me to get a dialog box. So if I want to save something I've scanned, I have to share it to another program, then attach it to an email or else copy and paste it from that other program into a third program like GIMP, from where I can open a dialog box and save the file wherever I want to save it.

I have tried performing a clean boot environment, disabling all non-Microsoft services and startup items, but the problem persists.

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you’re facing issues when saving files using Snip & Sketch or HP Smary app on your PC. I will certainly try my best to assist you with the issue.

For further clarity on the issue, please respond to the questions below:

    1. Which build version of Windows 10 are you using currently?
    2. Are you aware of any changes made to the PC prior to which you weren’t facing this issue?

Refer the article Which version of Windows operating system am I running?

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned below and see if that helps.

    Method 1: Troubleshoot File Explorer
