I have been trying to apply the 2021-07 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB5004953) but says "The Windows Modules Installer must be updated before you can install this package" and before Win 7 went out of support I was current with SSU and latest SHA-2 updates. Any idea how I can manually apply this? My Windows Update has been working fine for all other updates Office and Security Essentials.

2021-07-08T01:02:57+00:00 I tried the "Security Only" update -- KB5004951 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/july-6-2021-kb5004951-security-only-update-out-of-band-e05a81cd-9b45-4622-b715-ddb2367bca47).
I don't seem to have had any repercussions from installing KB4592510. I had just installed two July 6 Microsoft Office updates, so I guess I'll have to wait until next month to see if that SSU has any negative effects. I don't think it will, but if it does, that will probably be the final thing that pushes me to abandon Windows 7 (according to its KB article, "Servicing stack updates (SSUs) make changes to how updates are installed and cannot be uninstalled from the device").
If I were you, I'd just forget about this patch. For more on this, see https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsofts-incomplete-printnightmare-patch-fails-to-fix-vulnerability/

2021-07-08T00:11:00+00:00 Yikes so it backed out the update and did you do the monthly roll-up one so you got cumulative security updates? I think your right on the KB4592510 SSU update from 12/2020 as I didn't install that so is likely what I'm missing. Did you have any repercussions from installing that? just don't want to mess up my Win 7 OS as has been very stable and believe I have all the per-requisties of KB4592510.

2021-07-07T23:57:29+00:00 Check to see if KB4592510 is installed. I had to install that before I could install the July 6 update.
On the other hand, after that update seemingly successfully installed, when the computer restarted, I encountered this "Known Issue" with this update:
After installing this update and restarting your device, you might receive the error, "Failure to
configure Windows updates. Reverting Changes. Do not turn off your computer", and the update
might show as Failed in Update History.
The KB article says "this is to be expected" if you haven't purchased (or don't qualify to purchase) ESU (Extended Service Updates) -- which includes most people. My conclusion is that although Microsoft deemed this vulnerability sufficiently "critical" to warrant an out-of-band update, it wasn't considered critical enough to make the update available to ordinary users who do not have an ESU "add-on key."
