Slow desktop boot.

I have Windows 10 on an SSD and it should boot in a few seconds, but it takes about a minute to properly boot. At 1st I didn't care but now i'm getting annoyed, so I decided to check whats causing this slow boot and I found out that the "Service Host: DNS Client" is the culprit.

At startup the service is always at ~15% CPU usage and everytime I end/restart the service everything loads instantly as it should. This fixes the slow desktop boot, but I don't want to go into Task Manager every time I boot.

I already tried clearing the DNS Cache, changing the DNS and disabling any VPN network adapters.

Hello DavidUrsic, welcome to the Microsoft community my name is Luiz Cruz, I am a Windows 10 expert user and would be happy to help you;

I understand you are having problems with slow booting with the Windows 10 DNS Client service;

To try to solve the problem, I recommend that you follow the steps below:

Step 1:

Make a network reset:

Press the “Win + I” keys together to open the Windows 10 “Settings” screen and enter “Network and Internet”;

On the new screen, under “Status”, swipe the screen down and click on “Network Reset”;

Now click on “Restore Now” and confirm the start of the process.

After resetting the network settings it is recommended to restart the computer.

Check if the problem has been fixed, if not try the next step;

Step 2:

Check for new updates on Windows Update:

1: Open the Windows 10 "Start" menu and select the "Settings" item.

2: then select the "Update and Security" option.

3: In the "Windows Update" section, click "Check for updates".

4: If there are no updates, the message "You are up to date" will be displayed.

5: if there is any pending system update, the message "Features update for Windows 10 ..." will be displayed, then click on the "Download and install" item to start the system update.

6: wait for the update download to finish and restart the PC, or schedule a restart to be able to finish the procedure.

Step 3:

Make a clean boot:

Clean boot serves to determine whether a background program is interfering with the system or optimizing system loading.

  1. Press the Windows + R keys, type msconfig and click OK;
  2. In the System Configuration window, click on the services tab;
  3. At the bottom of the screen, check the Hide all Microsoft services box and click Disable all;
  4. Now click on the Startup Programs tab and on Open Task Manager;
  5. When loading the task manager, click on the start tab and disable all non-Microsoft programs (right-click on the program and choose disable), close the task manager and click OK on system configuration and restart computer if requested.

NOTE: This procedure disables all third party services and programs. You can later, if the problem is solved in this way, selectively enable the programs and services that will start with Windows, instead of keeping all disabled. If the problem returns after activating the startup of a specific service or program, the problem is exactly in the startup of this software and it is recommended to remove it.

Step 4:

Perform a disk clean:

Press Windows key + R and type: cleanmgr and press Enter;

Click on clean system files and wait for the files to load;

Select all files and click ok to delete them;

Check if the problem is fixed;

I hope I helped, see you soon!

    Open Settings, Apps, Startup to see what is loading at boot and make changes. Also consider unchecking Fast Boot in Power Options. Ironically, that sometimes can make boot slower. Also computer speed affects startup.

    I don't think the changes you made has much to do with it. Check Event Viewer to see if you changed something incorrectly.
