Just tried that...still can't get the SoftwareProtectionPlatform service to run :'(
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Short version:
I ensured that NETWORK SERVICE had full access (instead of the standard Read only access that it had by default) to the directories and registry keys as suggested in multiple forums.
I also reinstalled Windows, and that did not help.
Any further suggestions on what permission is missing and where?
Thank you!

Did you go to McAfee and get their removal software and completely remove all the code. Programs &features does not get the total amount of code and this left over code can cause problems.
As it is a laptop from Asus, it originally had McAffe installed on it.
Windows Build: 19042.1110
Background of situation:
Laptop, purchased end of March.
Because of a BIOS update in April, the Windows Product Key that was embedded in the BIOS was lost, and the laptop wanted to be activated again.
This month, I finally decided to bother with trying to fix the problem.
I contacted Asus tech support to get the original Product Key. However, it wouldn't activate because the Software Protection Platform service wasn't running. When I attempted to start the service, it would throw an error indicating it didn't have access to 'something'. "Error 5: Access Denied"
The suggested solutions I found in forums about giving NETWORK SERVICE additional permissions have not helped.
I contacted Asus tech support again, they suggested re-install windows and the Microsoft support.
Any 3rd party anti virus, security, cleanup programs EVER installed on the computer?
