Hi

I am trying to extend the volume of a partition on an external drive. After completing the wizard, I get this:

I selected "yes", and then I get this error:

The drive used to be the hard drive of a PC, but I've turned it into an external drive.

I'm using Windows 10 Home with an Admin user.

I have searched online, but I cannot find anything useful .

Here are some more screenshots that may come in use:

    Hi SamP#BlueShield,

The best option is to copy off any data you need to keep temporarily to another drive, then, in Disk Management, right click each partition on that drive and select 'Delete Volume'

When the whole drive is marked as one unallocated space, right click that and choose 'New - Simple volume' and accept the defaults.

That will give you a clean drive to use as a data drive, you can then copy your files back onto it.

    Hi SamP#BlueShield,

I am Dave, an Independent Advisor, I will help you with this.

Windows 10 has very limited partitioning capability, it can only extend into a space that is immediately to the right if the partition.

Is there data on those two partitions that you need to keep?

If there is, then you will need to use a 3rd party utility like the free version of AOMEI Partition Assistant to extend into that space.

    Thanks for your reply.

I do have data on it, I am in the process of going through it and moving files I want to keep and deleting the rest. I have no problem in formatting the partitions, or similar.

Should I format it, will I be able to extend the partitions? My end aim is to have one partition taking use of all the available space.

Is it easier to use a program like the AOMEI one you named above?
