Update & Security-Something went wrong

Anonymous

I have a Samsung laptop with Windows 10 home version 21H1.

When opening the Settings-Update & Security I get the following message, "Something went wrong, please try opening settings later"

I have tried all the fixes that I can find including,

sfc scannow

dism online cleanup-image restorehealth

stopping and restarting the windows update service

resetting the settings App

running the updates troubleshooter

Done a registry edit

Updated the Orchestrator Service (UsoSvc)

  • Windows Update Medic Service (WaaSMedicSvc)
  • Windows Update Service (wuauserv) so all show 2 in Dword.

I have restarted the machine several times and it has successfully downloaded the 21H1 update from the Windows Media Creation Tool site.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Hi John, Just for your info and the forum, none of the fixes worked for me.

The only way was to reset Windows and the fault then disappeared.

Thanks for your replies and help.

    Hello Cliff,

Thank you for updating me with that information. In case the above methods do not work, please consider performing a Reset this PC with Keep my files option selected.

Press Windows key+I to open Settings

    Select Update and Security

    Click Recovery

Under Reset this PC, click Get Started

Make sure to select Keep my files

Wait for the process to complete

Please check the support article below for more details.

Kindly let me know if this helps or if you have any further concerns.

Hi John and thanks for your reply.

I will try a free Malwarebytes scan and doing a clean boot by hiding all Microsoft services tomorrow.

I will also try the Stop Windows 10 Update Guard solution.

I already have my Task manager startup programs as disabled.

I will let you know how I get on.

If these fixes don't work then do I need to re-install windows? I have Win 10 on a USB stick and can boot from it but will keep my files.

    Thanks again.

    Hello Cliff,

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Windows user like you. I'll be happy to assist you today. When was the last time it worked properly?

It looks like something is interfering with Windows update service. Please try running your Antivirus or anti-malware program and try to scan your system for any virus or malware. Please try to scan your system using the free edition of Malwarebytes.

    https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/

    **Perform a Clean Boot

Determine whether a background program or a software conflict is causing the issue.

Go to the search box > type msconfig

Select System Configuration > go to the Services tab.

Select and put a check mark on "Hide all Microsoft services" > Click Disable all.

Go to Startup tab > Open Task Manager > Disable all the unnecessary services running there. Restart your computer.

Please try to enable Windows update service then check for updates again.
