folder has 2 names

I have a folder that was not being backed up and after investigating I found that the backup program was using the wrong name. However, the name they were using had been the name before I renamed it. I thought I just needed to refresh what the program was attempting to use but it continued to use the previous name.

So in fact the directory wa being backed up but with the wrong directory name.

What I found when I selected the directory bar in File Explorer was that the name displayed would change from "new name" to "old name". In 30 years of using Windows this may be the starngest thing I've seen.

I checked the name using "dir /X" to see the alternate short names but this did not give me any info.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Sorry for not updating you sooner.

I followed what you suggested and it worked. I expected it to work, but as Windows has been doing some strange stuff lately I was still concerned.

Your suggestion was the obvious solution but I didn't think of it. I was too consumed by wanting to understand it and just fix it.

    Thank you for your help.

Hi Stephen. I'm Greg, an Independent Advisor, here to help you until the problems are fixed.

Right click empty area of folder to choose New > Folder, Create an entirely new folder by the desired name with a slight variation so it won't show as a duplicate.

Move the files into the folder and delete the old one

Let me know how that works.
