I am currently running windows 10. I booted my computer up this morning and it did not bring up the usual log in screen. Instead it brought up a black screen with cmd prompt asking me to log in via cmd prompt. After going through the steps on the cmd prompt i got the error, “The system Event Notification Service service failed the sign-in. Function could not be executed”

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you’re facing issues when logging into your PC, and I certainly appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.

We will certainly look into this for you.

I would like to know if you’re aware of any changes made to the PC prior to which you weren’t facing this issue.

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to try booting the PC in Safe Mode and see if you’re able to login normally. Refer the article Start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10****

If you’re able to login normally then you can try booting the PC in Clean Boot and see if the PC boots fine. Refer the article How to perform a clean boot in Windows

Performing a clean boot will start the computer with minimal set of drivers and programs, to determine whether a background program is causing the issue. Some of the Startup programs will not load after performing a clean boot on the computer. However, that functionality will return when you reset the computer to start normally after finishing the troubleshooting.

Let us know how it goes, if the issue persists, we will certainly assist you further.

    Regards,

Pressing the windows button, and/or pressing windows+r doesn’t open anything. Ctrl+alt+del also doesn’t open anything. The computer wont even turn off, i have to force shut down.

What OS build are you on? Hit the Windows key, type winver, hit Enter.
    Or Windows key+r, winver, OK
