Windows 10 Error code 0x81000036

Over the weekend when my automated Windows 10 backup was to occur - the execution of the system backup failed with a 0x81000036 error. I have read a lot of internet information and it seems to all point to a number of repair technics that none of are applicable to my desktop and need other considerations.

My system is as follows:

Edition:           Windows 10 Home,

Version:          21H1,

Installed on:    9/6/2020,

OS Build:        19043.1110

Experience:     Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3530.0

My take on internet solutions so far for the 0x81000036 error

  • I do not create a system image of the Win 10 system,
  • I do not have a Windows Sandbox either as an option nor something I can turn off,
  • I do not have the Hyper-V feature as an option nor can I turn it off,
  • And I have checked and rechecked to ensure I have the latest updates; I am completely up to date.
  • My backup drive has 1.20TB free to handle the backup. My current backup drive has 629.73GB space used for approximately 4 months of weekly backups.

What I have tried so far to check system;

  • Ran - chkdsk /r
  • Ran - sfc /scannow
    • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. For online repairs, details are included in the CBS log file located at windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.
  • Here is the CBS log which shows the errors.
  • I noted in the log that 4 days before the backup failure that the CBS log reflects an KB3025096 update error. The update is: Windows Technical Preview December Update for x64-based systems (KB3025096) Last Modified: 12/15/2014. Not sure if this is the place to start?????
  • Any help you can provide would be appreciated….

Louis, you didn't say what backup you use. If it's File History see how to troubleshoot File History not working:

After twelve years daily in forums I do not recommend Windows backup because it is no longer supported or developed and can lose files.

The safest and most reliable backup method is to sort your files into their User Folders (Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, etc) and periodically drag or copy them to external or another hard drive. See tips for copying large groups of files here: https://www.pcworld.com/article/2086566/the-man...

Then have one other Cloud backup so your files are safe from fire and theft and easily accessible via the internet just like email. Some suggestions to help ease into this habit:

You can drag or copy 5gb for free into OneDrive app to store in the cloud where they are safe from fire and theft. You can also choose to sync the Desktop, Pictures and Documents folders (only) in OneDrive app Settings > Backup for real time backup. More here: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/116029-turn...

If you install Google Drive, you can use their new Backup to choose ANY User folders (Documents, Pictures, etc.) to sync up to 15g for free to their cloud in real time. You can also drag/copy selected files into Drive folder. More here:

Besides your files you should back up a System Image to use in place of reinstall in 20 minutes. The best free alternative is Macrium: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7363/macrium-ref....

There is an easy way to mount the System Image to extract files if needed. Some prefer to move their User folders off of C to make the image smaller and so they stay current if you need to re-image C. Here's how: http://www.dummies.com/computers/operating-syst...

This way if Windows ever becomes irreparable you can restore C in 20 minutes from recovery media, and your files will be current and safe in their own separate partition. If they are left on C they will be dated from when the image was taken.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you'll wait to rate whether my post helped you, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Louis, you're very wise to save Image backups. One neat thing about them is that if you imaged a partition with your files then they can be extracted from the image using the free Macrium app, so it also serves as a file backup as well as image.

Just one other tip on File History. Make sure if you use it to restore files to a new PC or hard drive that you follow the steps here because I've seen cases where users wipe out their archives by setting it up on a new PC and it thinks you want to start over:

    https://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-cor...

    https://www.techrepublic.com/article/restoring-...

But you can rest easier if you also have your files in the Macrium image. If not I'd also drag the User folders periodically to External Hard drive.

Let me know if there's anything else. I'll stay subscribed to this thread in case you need anything else, until the system locks it in a few months.

    Louie;

    Thank you for the reply.

I looked at the link you sent and none of the suggestions apply in the article. First, I am not trying to do a OS or file restore. I am just doing a simple weekly back-up of my data files across a number of my drives. Second, within my 'Window Feature' I have no reference to either a Sandbox or Hyper-V.

Thank you so much for your feedback..

    Louis
