Stuck in Dark Mode

On Saturday Jul24th my Windows 10 booted up with all of my Google centric apps (like Gmail and Play Store) permanently stuck in dark mode. No matter how I changed the settings, dark mode remains in effect. Other non-Google apps function normally including Microsoft Edge. How do I remove dark mode from Google apps? At the same time Microsoft Edge has inserted itself into my Windows 10 operating system changing the options that were available to me previously.

Hi Juliana. Thank you so much for your quick response. I've been playing with the settings during the last day or so almost around the clock and right after I sent my plea for help to the Microsoft Community (thinking it was a Windows problem) I decided to send the same plea to Google and got the following message which contains the link to fix the problems via a secret menu. I figured if there was a way to enable that dark mode, then there must be a way to disable it. The message I received is below. I had to enter that link in a URL in Chrome and I had to do the same thing again in Brave (the browser I use most). Force Dark Mode was enabled. I simple clicked on the button to disable it and the results were immediate. I am still mystified why this happened without my permission or knowledge. I checked my Programs in the Control Panel and saw that on the 23rd both Edge and Chrome downloaded new versions and without warning.

My problem is now solved and it is a great relief. Thank you again for your quick offer of help with the issue. I will not forget this. - Neal

To enable Forced Dark Mode in Chrome 78 and later, follow these steps:

    1. Enter the following address in your URL bar: chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark
    2. This will bring up a hidden Chrome settings menu and the Force Dark Mode option.
    3. Go the drop-down menu next to Force Dark Mode and select Enabled.
    4. At the bottom, hit the Relaunch button to restart your browser.
