Recently purchased a NEW version of Win10 from Walmart. Went to install today, prompted to scratch to reveal product key, first segment is only 4 characters XXXX instead of 5 XXXXX-XXXXX - with that being said, unable to activate.

Was this key sent you in e-mail? Who is a sender?
Or did you bought a Windows 10 box with USB installation drive?
A pack with DVD means this is OEM version and you are obliged to sell a PC after installation. See System Builder agreement at the back side of the pack.
Likely the first letter was removed during crearing sticker's code. You may try to shade this place with very soft pencil, sometimes this allow to see the letter.
Or just try letters and numbers one by one until success.
It was ordered via online shopping. They key was provided on the packaging of the CD.
