Does Bit Locker work without Modern Standby?

Hi all,

I'm running Windows 11 Pro on an AMD 3900x processor and a ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS motherboard.

Under System Information (as administrator), Device Encryption Support is reporting: 'Reasons for failed automatic device encryption: Hardware Security Test Interface failed and device is not Modern Standby, Un-allowed DMA capable bus/device(s) detected'.

Under cmd> ‘powercfg /a’ modern standby (S0 Low Power Idle) is showing as not available on this system.

I have two questions:

  1. Will Bit Locker still encrypt and protect my drive even though ‘Device Encryption Support' is reporting incompatibilities? I have read that without modern standby, device encryption is unavailable, is this true?
  2. Is there any way I can enable Modern Standby with my hardware?

Thanks for any help.

I'm not aware of a way to add support for Modern Standby.

It's either supported originally from the OEM or not. :(

It's usually 2-in-1 or tablet type devices that come with support for Modern Standby.

I understand my PC doesn't currently support Modern Standby. I'd like to understand which pieces of hardware I'd need to change to gain this feature.

It's a matter if your PC supports Modern Standby or not. The tutorial link below can help provide more details about Modern Standby if needed, and how to check if supported or not.

    Thanks for the useful links.

Do you know what it would take to make my PC Modern Standby compatible? What is likely to be the limiting hardware currently?

    Hello,

Device Encryption would require Modern Standby.

Since you have Windows 11 Pro installed, you will be able to turn on BitLocker like below in Windows 11 with or without Modern Standby.
