monitor resolution issue

I recently accidently changed my monitor's resolution to a higher one and now it only shows "Input not supported", It is an old acer monitor, I use a vga cable converter to hdmi to connect to my windows 10 dell laptop. When I plug in the hdmi connecting the monitor to the laptop, they both turn off because the setting on my monitor was "Show only on 2" which 2 is my monitor. I can still move the cursor and click on things while the screens are turned off but I can't view what I'm doing and I can't change the resolution because when I disconnect the hdmi cable the laptop doesn't detect the monitor so I can't change any settings about it.

Hi Ada. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, specializing in Installation, Performance, Troubleshooting and Activation, here to help you.

The resolution was changed in Windows 10, not the monitor. So just change the Display to the laptop screen, change the resolution back to recommended. Now you should be able to change to the External with the working resolution.

If this doesn't reset it for the external monitor use this method to set different resolutions for multiple monitors:

    https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/diff...

If those don't work then System Restore to a point before the problem began following this guide: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-r...

System Restore is your first line of defense and can take you back to a point before a problem began like a time machine. If it doesn't help then you can undo it. Read about it first in the tutorial above and then try restoring to just before this started.

Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
