File Explorer Details Display Columns

Hello,

None of the display fields show the user the last date:time a full folder path was last modified (new files added or files changed). The standard File Explorer selection of Name, Date Modified, Type and Size does not do this, as Date Modified may relate to when the top Folder was originally created and subfolders maybe added or a new file added to an existing folder but it does not change at all.

As in this example the Date Modified for CAR does not reflect that a subfolder was changed.

I note there are Apps available for monitoring was is happening real time (going forward), but I need just a current status date of last change to begin with. This appears to be independent of Win version.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks

    Hello LOOKout2014,

Welcome to Microsoft Support Community Forum!

As far as I know, the "Date modified" of a folder is only changed when the folder is modified. Any change to the subfolder (VW) of the parent folder (CAR) does not count as a change of the parent folder.

If it were Windows 10 OS, I would have suggested that you Send feedback to Microsoft with the Feedback Hub app.

    Thanks,

Thank you Mr. Trust_A you are right, and that is the problem.

Because it means that I have to go down through each path of dozens of folders to determine which ones contain changed contents.

If a folder's contents has changed then the Date Modified should change. Date created should be the one that remains the same for CAR in this example while Date Modified changes to the last time its contents were modified.

Why is this not the case?

    Cheers

    Hi LOOKout2014,

I just ran a test on my Windows 10 PC and everything seem to be working fine for me. I created a folder called CAR and took note of the Date Modified and after 2 mins I created a subfolder called VM. The result? The Date Modified of the CAR folder changed to reflect the exact time I created the VM folder.

Could you try to modify your subfolder or create a new file in the Car folder? What happens?

    Thanks,

I moved a folder into the VW subfolder of CAR and the Date Modified for CAR did update.

But this does not happen consistently.

For example I paid a credit card bill and saved a pdf of the transaction receipt to a Payments folder in a 2022 folder in that Credit # folder for a particular Bank folder. But only the lowest level folder that contains the pdf has an updated Date modified.
