Desktop Option

My computer recently had a conniption and I had to restore some files which work ok. But now I find that I cannot save any document or image directly onto the screen itself, whereas I used to just click Save As.... then nominate the desktop and the items would appear on the screen without need for a folder. I was then able to sort and file them into their correct destinations. I created a new desktop folder in the library which now saves stuff for me, but I like saving work directly to the screen as it suits me. Is there any way to restore this function.

Thanks in advance,

CeeBee

It's pretty late (early) where I am, so I'm not going to do much right now, but the following will be helpful for further figuring out what's going on.

In the "Save As" window shown in your post, you selected "Desktop" in the "Libraries" section. In the right-hand pane, you have two entries: Desktop and Desktop Icon. Right-click on "Desktop" (the one in the right pane), select Properties, and let me know what is in the "Target" box.

Scroll up to the top of the Navigation Pane. There ought to be several items above the "Libraries" section (see below). You likely won't have the same 6 items in this screenshot, but what do you see there?

    hi,

this is what I get. I do not know how this happened - the whole computer just glitched 1 day and everything went haywire.

I am now getting folders such as My Pictures displayed on screen as well. It's so odd. Anyway here's hoping but don't stress if you can't help. I'm almost at the end of my tether. Thanks a bunch :)

    Just to clarify things...

When you right-click the Desktop and select New > Text Document,

the result should be an icon on your Desktop like this:

Is that what you get? And yes, if you double-click that icon, Notepad will open with a blank screen.

When you go to save a new file, the "Save as" window should look something like this:

    Is that what you see?

What is in the Location Bar (in the image, the Location Bar shows Desktop)?

If the Location Bar shows something other than Desktop (and if you see the Navigation Pane to the left as shown above), click on "Desktop" in the Navigation Pane. That should put "Desktop" in the Location Bar.

While you have the Save As window open, right-click on "Desktop" in the Navigation Pane and select "Properties." On the "Shortcut" tab of the "Properties" window, the "Target" should be

C:\Users<yourusername>\Desktop. Is that what you see?

Hi, thanks for responding to this question.

My files were restored directly from a portable hard drive. I back up everything routinely to this drive. When I attempt to save new work to the desktop I click save as, name the document, and then ok. The document saves in my library desktop folder under my user name. It will not display directly onto the screen, which is where everything used to save. No error message appears. It's just not there, it's only in my library folder. I have to drag it to the desktop and file it manually.

When I right click the screen and select new text document I get a blank page, and no error message.

    Hope this helps, many thanks,

    CeeBee

Other than any personal data files, which files did you restore and where did you obtain the files you used to restore them?

What happens when you attempt to save using Desktop as the destination? If you get an error message, what is the complete text?

What happens if you right-click on a blank spot on your Desktop and select New > Text Document? If you get an error message, what is the complete text?
