Encryption key missing for D drive

I inherited a Dell laptop from my father-in-law. I noticed that I have an encrypted D drive. I don't have the encryption key. I was told by a computer repair company that I need to ask Microsoft for this information. How can I get this encryption key so that I can access the D drive?

    Hi GaryT69,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

The D drive is encrypted with Bitlocker and you must have the key to open it.

If you have the original owner's Microsoft account, you can try the following methods:

Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support

Recovery options in Windows - Microsoft Support

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Your Sincerely
