Windows Upgrade & Audio Driver Error

Hi All,

I need some help with my laptop as nothing seems to be working properly on it anymore.

A small new Windows update didn't get installed properly yesterday and when I turned my laptop on today it wouldn't start up. after a lot of shutting it down and starting it up made me go through diagnostic and then through repair process which never finished. But after many forceful shutdowns the Laptop started up but I could not find any sound output devices. I tried restarting the Windows Audio device from services but it gives me an error saying I cannot start it up. tried seeing if there is an update needed for the audio drivers but it tells me they are up to date.

So then I tried to uninstall the latest Windows update but to finish that I need to restart the PC and whenever I do that the restart initiates an upgrade not deinstalling. This will only go to 7% before trying to redo the Windows upgrade a few times before giving up and starting the Laptop like normal.

However, now I'm unable to use certain features of my laptop: cannot open Microsoft world document/ excel etc.., cannot open folders (none of them) and I cannot even use snipping tool.

I have been trying to get the rest of the Windows update done but it won't install it at all and it stays at 0% no matter how often I restart or shut down my computer.

Is anyone else having similar issues? Or does anyone know how to solve this?

thank you in advance!

    Dear Sidra Rama

Judging from the current situation, CMD and PowerShell on your computer are missing components that have run as administrator, I suggest you try to create USB media to repair.

Running MediaCreationTool in safe mode seems to be an option, but my suggestion is to prepare an 8GB storage space USB and make a USB bootable drive on another computer. After the production is complete, insert it into the current system and boot from USB by modifying the BIOS/UEFI settings. At this point, you will enter an interface, as shown in the figure **(Repair your computer)**where you can complete the repair of the computer:

The following article may help you access to the interface of Repair your computer:

How to Perform a Clean Install or Reinstall of Windows 11 - Microsoft Community

Refer to the method here to set the boot from USB

Feel free to let me know how it goes.

    Hi Chandy,

I cannot run cmd or powershell as administrator.

And when I open powershell not in administrator mode I cannot run the commands you suggested.

So I went and tried creating the Media Creation Tool from Windows, I can download it but I cannot open it because I'm unable to open any type of files on my laptop. which means I cannot run Media Creation Tool for repairs.

Is there anything else I can do? Is it possible to run the Media Creation Tool from safe mode?

    Kind Regards,

    Sidra

    Hello Sidra Rama

Welcome to the Microsoft Community and hope you are doing great.

According to your present description, issues occurred after Windows update was not installed correctly. Generally speaking, if Windows is updating, please wait patiently, otherwise these incorrectly installed KB updates may have a bad impact on system performance. Here are some steps you can try to turn on the Windows Audio service:

Press and hold Windows > Search for PowerShell (Run as Administrator) > Enter the following command:

net localgroup Administrators /add networkservice

Enter and type the following command:

net localgroup Administrators /add localservice

Hold down Windows+R > type services.msc > find Windows Audio > right click properties > type after this account :

NT AUTHORITY\LocalService

Set the password > Click Apply > Try to start the Windows Audio service again to see if it can be started
Second question about windows updates not going ahead

Enter CMD after Windows+S, right click and run the following command as an administrator:

net stop wuauserv

net stop bits

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

net start wuauserv

net start bits

Press Enter after each command is executed, then restart the computer to see if the update service is restored.
If the update service has not been reset, I suggest you use the Media Creation Tool provided by Microsoft to create the ISO media, execute setup.exe in the ISO media, and perform the repair upgrade:

Download Windows 11

For how to perform a repair upgrade of you system, this article may help you:

How to perform repair upgrade in Windows 11 - Microsoft Community

Note: Repair upgrade does not mean ≠ reinstalling Windows 11. It just repairs the error files that have occurred in the system before, and restores the Windows update function that was not installed normally before. Please remember to check the options in the red box :

Feel free to come back to the community if any updates.
