How to find which driver is causing second boot failure -- upgrade to Windows 10

I am trying to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to 10

I get this error:

0xC1900101 - 0x40017

installation failed in the second boot phase with an error during boot operation

SetupDiag says:

UnsignedDriverBootFailure

I run sigverif which says all drivers are signed

DXDiag.exe, doesn't find anything wrong either.

I have tried uninstalling just about everything in device manager, but the same happens.

How do I find which driver is causing the problem?

Thanks

Hello Bitsfff

Apologies for my late reply.

After observation, it seems that this setup log is the update log in 2018. did you see other recent update log in this path?

Based on my query, the channel for free upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 seems to have been closed as early as 2016. This point may be one of the reasons why your current upgrade fails, so even if the upgrade is successful, your Windows 8.1 license may be required buy again. Before deciding to upgrade, I can't guarantee that the current Windows 8.1 license will still be valid for Windows 10.

If you need to use Windows 10, try back up all important data, then delete all partitions and format all drives, make a USB installation medium of Windows 10, and then boot from the BIOS/UEFI interface. And perform a new installation, the following is an installation tutorial, the operation time may take about 30 minutes. The specific time depends on the hardware quality of the current computer:

Hi Chandy, thanks for you help. I got it working. Doing a "refresh" on my 8.1 Windows did the trick.

    Hello Chandy,

    Thank you for the reply.

I tried the clean boot approach and I was still unable to upgrade to Windows 10

I do not find Citrix VDA on my computer, though if you tell me specifically where to look for it I can confirm.

I will send you the setupact.log -- let me know how to send it to you

    Hello Bitsfff

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

According to your description, it seems that when upgrading to Windows 10 via Windows 8.1, you encountered the error 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 in the upgrade process, generally this cause may be caused by the wrong driver. For example, the anti-virus screener driver or the encryption driver. Please try to boot Windows in a clean state and then try to upgrade to Windows 10. Make sure the "Download and install updates (recommended)" option is selected.

For more information, please see the following article on how to proceed:

How to perform a clean boot in Windows - Microsoft Support

Disclaimer: A “clean boot” starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It helps to determine whether a background program is interfering with your game or program and to isolate the cause of a problem.

These steps of "clean boot" might look complicated at first glance. However, to avoid any trouble for you, please follow them in order and step-by step so that it will help you get you back on track.
Additionally, could you please provide some details on whether Citrix Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) is currently installed on your device. Citrix VDA installs the device driver and the file system filter driver (CtxMcsWbc). This Citrix filter driver prevents the upgrade from writing changes to disk, so the upgrade cannot be completed.
In the meantime, please try to go to the following path and you will see the related error log setupact.log, please hold down Windows+R and type the following path information ,

C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log

Search for setupact.log in the open window > then share this log with me in a private message, which will help us to investigate this issue.

Feel free to post back here if any updates.
