Windows 11 Multiple nested Documents and OneDrive folders

I recently updated to Windows 11 from Windows 10. All seemed fine until today when the system asked me to log in to OneDrive. I did this and it asked if I wanted to backup my Documents, Desktop and Pictures (which seemed like a good idea even though I don't use these folders). The system then asked for a file location. I keep my data on the D drive so pointed to the existing OneDrive folder there.

I now seem to have my OneDrive folder which contains a Documents folder, which contains a OneDrive folder which contains a Documents folder, which contains a OneDrive folder which contains a Documents folder ... and so on! Even more worryingly, some of these folders have my file structure and files inside and others don't

Does this mean that I now have multiple copies of all my OneDrive files, and where will new files be saved to? This is very confusing, especially as I'm not very tech savvy! Incidentally, I have a number of folders inside my OneDrive and usually save files to one of these rather than the local Documents folder.

Can someone help please as I'm now nervous about doing anything on my laptop in case it is saving to some random place where I'll never find it again

UPDATE: I've just checked the online version of my OneDrive and it has the Documents folder but not all of the nested folders inside it. Does this make any difference to the solution?

    Hello Looby,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Generally speaking, when a file is synchronized to the cloud via Onedrive, the file will not be lost unless you manually modify the data in the cloud. Is the content displayed in OneDrive on the web page complete?

In addition, if convenient, could you please provide the screenshot information of the folder nested in the following folder so that I can check this? Because I'm sorry I didn't understand what you meant in the second paragraph.

What are your current requirements? Are local files not fully synced with the OneDrive cloud? Or are you worried about losing your files? Or some other concern?

If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best regards,
