Hello My Uncles' dell desktop won't load windows paint and his documents and images are missing. The start menu has missing apps and he can only right click it. There is a folder on desktop new microsoft access database he didn't put there . I tried a restore it wouldn't go through. Event viewer has a long list of failed updates the same day that this happened. He remembers an administrative question at the time. Should I try doing a restore under safe mode? Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out. My name is, Zadee. I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I'll be glad to help you today.

If there were no changes done and the issue just suddenly happened, I would check the Restore Point in the computer. This just saves you time as this allows your computer to go back to a point in time where the issue has not happened yet. If you can do it in normal mode follow this:

-Win + R to open run box

    -Type: rstrui <Enter>

-Select the restore point date prior to the day the issue occurred

    -Hit NEXT, then FINISH

-Wait for the restoration to finish

If you cannot do it in normal mode. Go to the advanced startup options in Settings > Update & security > Recovery > Advanced Startup > Restart. (You can do this in safe mode)

Once you're in WinRe, go to Troubleshoot > Adv options > System restore > Select the oldest restore point > Hit Next > Finish > Wait for the process to finish.

    Best Regards,
