My friend has a problem with his PC that began saying unmountable boot volume, so we went through a video showing the fixes. None of the fixes worked except one that we haven't tried which was resetting the PC but before we did that we restarted the computer to see if somehow the PC was fixed even though the continue to windows 10 button disappeared from the repair screen. After booting up the PC, it shows error code 0xc000000f and says "the PC device needs to be repaired, the boot configuration data for your PC is missing or contains errors". We've tried force shutting down the computer 3 times to load up the repair setting again but it won't work is there something we can do?

    Hi CubbyCraft

    Thanks for the clarification.

If the current PC is still inaccessible and cannot log in to the official website to download Media-Creation-Tool to complete the overlay installation.

The reason can only be that the system of the current computer is faulty, for which we can only suggest that you try to reinstall your Windows 10 using USB as a medium.

Note: Before the operation starts, please confirm whether the hard disk is partitioned. If it has been partitioned and your boot partition is C drive. Please try to unplug the hard disk and insert it into another computer as much as possible to backup the data of other drive . For example, (D:) drive/(E:) drive/(F:) drive. When installing a new system, all data in C drive will be erased by default. Data on other drive will not be affected

1- Click to **** download the Windows Media Creation Tool on an available computer or another computer.

2- Run the Windows Media Creation Tool and insert the USB flash drive.

3- In the Windows Media Creation Tool, select: Create installation media for another computer - Select the Version of Windows - Select the media you want to use (USB flash drive) - Click Create

4- After creation, this USB can be used to install Windows 11.

5- Insert this USB into your PC.

6- Click the power button to turn on the PC, and then, after pressing the power button, quickly press F2 several times (perhaps there are other buttons, you need to select "How to enter the BIOS"), which will lead to entry into the BIOS.

7- Since bios settings are different on each device, I can only give you a general description of the settings you are looking for: Boot Manager or Boot Menu

8- Find the USB and start it as a USB. The name can be UEFI-USB XXXX or it can be a USB brand.

7- After starting with USB, you enter the Windows installation interface.

9- Select the language, and then click next

    10- Click "Install Now"

11- Click the "I don't have a product key" button

12- Select the version of Windows (select the version of the original version, otherwise it cannot be activated), and then click Next

    13- Accept the terms

    14- Click "Custom Installation"

15- Select the windows installation location in the new interface, and then click Next . (If you want to merge or split partitions, you can do so here too)

16- Wait until the installation is complete and restart.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes.

Hello, we tried to restart the PC into safe mode but it didn't work and sent us back to the recovery setting where you can choose to continue, troubleshoot, or turn off your PC. We also ran the commands in cmd and nothing ended up happening. As for the Media creation tool for windows 10, we are confused about how to download it when we don't have access to windows 10 and can't get to the website to download it. After those didn't work we tried resetting the PC and chose to keep personal files. We then chose to download personal files through the cloud but that had an error and didn't let us so we tried local reinstall but when we selected it all it did was load a bit and send us right back to the choose an option screen for recovery settings. Are there any other things we can do about this? Thank you

    Hi CubbyCraft

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, don't worry, we can work together to get closer to the answer.

From the Windows 10 category you posted, we know your problem is "The system encountered a blue screen unmountable boot volume and encountered error code 0xc000000f while booting ". Please feel free to correct me if my understanding is wrong. I know that sometimes troubleshooting can take a while and the fact that the problem has not been resolved can be frustrating.

We appreciate the methods and efforts you have tried, we also recommend that you try to put your Windows system into safe mode, and then repair the boot volume through the command prompt. Please refer to the following official instructions for clean boot steps:

Start your PC in safe mode in Windows (microsoft.com)

After entering safe mode, enter the command prompt mentioned in this video in turn:

Issue these commands, pressing Enter after each command prompt completed

    bootrec /fixmbr

    bootrec /fixboot

    bootrec /scanos

    bootrec /rebuildbcd

At the same time, please try to overwrite the current Windows 10 system, and use the official Media-Creation-Tool production system to perform the overwrite installation of the Windows 10 system, which can keep the existing personal data and installed programs, and it can also repair and solve various problems encountered in the system.

First download the Media-Creation-Tool tool for Windows 10 from Microsoft's official website:

    Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

    1-Run the Media Creation Tool.

2-Now select the "Upgrade this PC now" option.

3-The installer will prepare the necessary files, so you need to wait.

4-Select Download and install updates (recommended) and click Next.

5-Wait for the update to download.

6-Follow the on-screen instructions. On the Ready to Install screen, click the Change what to keep option.

7-Select Keep personal files and apps and click Next.

8-Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the upgrade process.

Also, if the above steps don't work, try to reset your current computer, there are three ways to reset your PC, and choose to keep your personal files.

Note: While you can choose to keep the files, it's best to copy them to another drive in case the reset operation fails, and you should list your installed apps as you can't keep them during the reset, and these apps needs to be reinstalled

Please feel free to let me know if you got any further updates, thanks.

    Best regards,

    Chandy|Microsoft Community Support Specialist

    Hi CubbyCraft

This kind of problem occurs mainly because when the USB drive was set as booted, the EFI boot is used by default instead of the common MBR boot, so this will happens.

This situation often occurs when the original 32-bit system is installed, and now the 64-bit system is installed. The following are two common solutions, ranging from simple to complex, I hope one of them will help you:

    Method one:

After the above problem occurs, directly unplug the USB drive and insert it into another computer, delete the efi folder and the bootmgr.efi file in the USB. Then, then use the USB to install the system, it will not appear this kind of error. The reason for deleting these two folders and files is because the installation from the USB will use efi to boot by default. as the picture shows:

    Method Two:

When we are prompted by this error, do not restart the computer, directly press the "Shift+F10" key combination on the keyboard, then the CMD command prompt window will pop up.

In the pop-up CMD command prompt window, enter the commands in sequence as shown in the figure below.

    1. Enter "list disk", and press Enter to confirm; (All disks will be listed, remember the disk number of your own hard disk, and you can distinguish it by the size of the hard disk. disk 0 is your hard disk, and the disk 1 is the USB disk)

    2. Enter "select disk 0" and press Enter to confirm; (select disk 0, which is the hard disk to be used as the system)

    3. Enter "clean" and press Enter to confirm; (Empty the disk, which is equivalent to formatting the entire disk)

    4. Enter "convert gpt" and press Enter to confirm; (convert the hard disk to GPT format, if you want to convert the hard disk to MBR, enter "convert mbr")

Note: After successfully converting the selected disk to GPT format, we can install the Win10 system through UEFI boot method. Before that, I also recommend you to back up the data of the hard disk. You can choose to insert it into other computers for backup. and copy your data.

Please feel free to let me know how it goes.

Hello again! We followed steps 1-13 but when we choose "Custom Installation" it showed us 4 drivers listed as, "Drive 0 Partition 1", "Drive 1 Partition 1", "Drive 1 Partition 2", and "Drive 1 Partition 2". We couldn't download windows on either of the drives because it said "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed on GPT disks." I looked up what it said and there are some fixes to convert MBR to GPT but I didn't want to mess up and make the problem worse. What should we do at this point?
