In Win 10 (21H2), single user/Admin, I've got hidden files unchecked so I can see system folders such as AppData and its subfolders. However, in the email program I use, Sylpheed, when I go to add an attachment -- Users > myname -- AppData doesn't show. Run as Admin doesn't solve it. I haven't needed this for awhile, so I don't know when it disappeared, but for sure it was there in previous versions of Windows. Could this be a bug (or security feature) introduced somewhere along the line in Win 10? It's accessible via browser in webmail. Thanks,

If needing a MS password at start up in Windows -- now skipped -- counts, yes, I'm using an MS account.
I do use MBAM in addition to Win Defender, but disabling it for a reboot had no effect.
As indicated at the beginning of my post, Windows is the current version and yes, up to date as of this morning -- I run update morning and evening to keep security updates current.
I ran the scans you proposed and rebooted (without MBAM). No effect.
Any other ideas?
Dear highstream,sorry, I didn't realize that I had already activated the Hidden Items;
Are you signed in with a local account or a Microsoft account?
Do you use any antivirus other than Windows Defender?
Check if you are updated with the latest version of Windows 10;
Press Windows key + i and go to Update and Security;
Click Check for updates and do ALL pending updates;
Update Microsoft Store apps;
Open the store and click on Library;
Click on Get updates and wait for all apps to be updated;
Run the system file checker;
Press the Windows + X keys, select Command Prompt (Admin), copy and paste the commands below and press enter after each command.
Sfc /ScanNow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the process to finish and restart the pc;
Make sure the Appdata folder is displayed by the Mail app;
I hope I helped, even more!
In the first line of my OP, hoping to get past your reply, I wrote "...I've got hidden files unchecked so I can see system folders such as AppData and its subfolders." Doesn't that accomplish the same thing? In any case, "Hidden Items" was already checked.
Now that's clarified, what might be blocking access to AppData from within my email program's attachment process?
Hello highstream, welcome to the Microsoft community, I'll be happy to help you today;
I understand that the Appdata folder is not seen by the email program;
The Appdata folder is hidden by the system by default;
Initially I suggest you try the following;
Open File Explorer;
Click on View at the top of the screen and check the "Hidden Items" option;
Check that the Appdata folder is now seen by the Mail app;
Hope this helps, see you soon!
