I'm trying to delete my Touchpad mouse driver permanently so that I can get a precision touchpad, and so my cursor does not jump, and so that my current driver does not install automatically in Device Manager and Windows Update. I have a Lenovo Ideapad 330 running Windows 11. When I try to get access to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mshidkmdf.sys, it says that, "The action cannot be completed because the file is open in another program. Close the file, and try again." However, when I look at Process Explorer and Resource Monitor, it says that there are no files open. When I am deleting my mouse driver, am I doing this correctly? If I am, how do I get access to this file? If I'm not, what should I do to delete my touchpad permanently?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Hi Adwissler. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

The only way to disable a touchpad is to find out if your model PC has a key to do this, if the touchpad software adds a setting to disable touchpad when external pointing device is attached, or to disable it in the Device Manager.

Is your touchpad jumping when trying to use it or when using another pointing device like a mouse? If so Update your touchpad driver and BIOS/UEFI firmware from the Lenovo Support Downloads webpage for your exact model here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/

Then check in Setting > Devices > Touchpad and Additional Settings (on all tabs) for settings the full driver adds that might help solve the issue or let you disable touchpad when pointing device is attached.

    Try the troubleshooting steps here:

Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad to go over the Settings. Then choose Additional Settings which opens the Mouse properties box. The Touchpad software installs a tab onto it - usually the last one - that should have more settings to check, including a checkbox to Disable Touchpad when USB pointing device is attached. This prevents palm drag from causing the cursor to jump

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
