Hi All,

So here is the background on this issue. Last week I had the "blue screen" pop up and was unable to fix it in my HP. The checks said it's going to die at any minute. So I pulled the hard drive and today I received a SSD reader so I could copy the hard drive and try and save some personal files. When I went though the process of changing the owner to "everyone" in the advanced security settings for the users the system it ran into an error in one of the programs and it could not get by it. It timed out and now it will not let me skip it or anything. What else can I do to try and get these files?! I tried copying it to an external hard drive - and I get the following errors "access denied, You'll need to provide Administrator permission to copy this folder. But When I go into the file folder it says "everyone" has access. Additionally, when I just try to copy to a folder on the desktop, it show's it completed it, but I can't find it. Please Help!

Hi KoriDas. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

See if you can Take Ownership of the drive's folders using this handy right click shortcut which installs a Take Ownership shortcut to your right click menu to use in cases like this on files and folders which won't cooperate:

https://www.askvg.com/add-take-ownership-option.... The only warning is to not use it on C:\Windows folder files as this will compromise security.

If that doesn't work then use this same method to Rescue Files when WIndows won't start: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki.... It uses the Command Prompt from Repair Mode or Bootable Media when WIndows is not running and cannot block it.

If those methods don't work then the drive may have already failed. You'll need to use your backup.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.
