Windows 11 Image Backup

I find on my external drive a folder labeled as windowsimagebackup but cannot access it. Properties shows it size as 0 but diskexplorer reports it is 264GB. It was created in January in Windows 11. (1) How do I test it to see if it truly is an image backup? (2) How do I update it say on a monthly basis and delete the previous version? I do backup in other ways, just want to know if this is a good approach and one that can be relied on.

Thanks

If you want to update the current Image, you would need to run Backup and Restore feature from the control panel. Taking the backup would update the system Image.

This is the reason why I suggested moving to the third party solution, because even Microsoft has just kept it for compatbility purposes. Even MS recommends moving to a 3rd party vendor asap.

Hope that makes sense and helps.

Thanks Sumit. However you didn't answer the other questions. I'd like to update the current image if I can before trying this.

    Hi CW,
I am Sumit here to assist you with this question.

You can test the same by booting into WinRE and selecting Image Backup restore. It would show you if the backup is correct and you want to restore it.

Please open the Windows Recovery environment using the steps below:

Press and hold Shift+click the restart button on the lock screen to open recovery options. Click Advanced options>Troubleshoot.

If you are not able to reach the lock screen or start your computer, restart your PC two times when the boot screen is shown. On the third time, windows should open Windows Recovery automatically. From there select, Windows Recovery.

Backup tools in Windows 10 are deprecated and are not being actively maintained. I recommend switching to a 3rd party solution like Reflect, which is more flexible and is reliable, which allows backups after intervals.
