I have tried to delete the windows.old folder to make a little space available. It won't delete even tho I have tried changing the name os the folder, attempted to delete it using Glary utilities, and attempted to change the ownership of the folder (I'm a bit uncertain about this last one). Anyway, the folder won't delete. Is there a tool available to get this folder gone? I'm using Windows 10 Home on a pc.

Anybody ????

    Hi Dave:

I did the disk cleanup twice and then a third time for good measure. I did the Cleanup system files also, but the windows.old folder is still there and wont delete. At this point i've horsed around with it for several hours over the past couple of days (and nites). I've probably got things so screwed up that it might take major surgery to get that damn folder deleted. When I check the properties of the windows.old folder, it says the folder contains 4 folders and 0 bytes! But when I try to delete the main folder or any of the interior 4 folders, I get that error message.

    Hi Dennis

Just checking in with you, did you see the old operating system files in Disk Cleanup (System Files)?

    Hi Dave:

Thanks for your response! I'm going thru the process you suggested right now. I'll post again after the 2nd Disk Cleanup.

    Hi ibedennis

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

Have you tried using Disk Cleanup to delete that folder, it will be listed as 'Previous Operating Systems' in that utility

Run Disk Cleanup twice as indicated below.

    Open File Explorer

    Click on your hard drive

On the Manage Tab - Disk Tools, click Cleanup

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete

    Start Disk Cleanup again

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

Important - this time in the resulting dialog, click 'Cleanup System Files'

Let Disk Cleanup run another scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete
