Windows 11 install error

I'm trying to install the free upgrade to windows 11 from my fully updated 10. I got this error message:

Windows can't be installed because this PC has an unsupported disk layout for UEFI firware.

Everything I can find online is references to this error when trying to upgrade TO windows 10, not people who already installed it. Can someone help me figure out how to correct this?

is there a file to just to a windows 11 install since I have to start from scratch? seems inefficient to install 10 just to instantly install 11

another question, this looks like my bios is already in UEFI?

    Image

I did try MBR2GPT that was included with windows, however even running as administrator, nothing happens when I launch it

    Hi almostnorth

I did not see your replies, because you did not click Reply on my answer.

I see the problem, Windows 10 is installed in Legacy BIOS Mode, and your disk is in the wrong format, Windows 11 must be installed in UEFI Mode for extra security.

It is a big job to convert to UEFI, there are two methods.

    1

You can try to convert the drive without data loss from MBR to GPT using the tool that Microsoft provide, then boot into BIOS and switch to UEFI Mode

Before you attempt to do this, please backup your personal files.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deploy...

    2

Backup your personal files, then clean install Windows 10 form a bootable USB and before doing that you will need to change BIOS to UEFI and convert the drive form MBR to GPT, which would wipe all data on the drive.

And the other one, looks like this is because I'm somehow on MBR even though this PC is a year old and has never run anything but 10? do I have to do a clean install?
