Random unresponsive mouse clicks.

A few days ago I started having issues where I would try to click on a specific application whether it be the taskbar an application like discord or a browser and the left click would not register. I would be in my browser and then if I would try to click out of it I wouldn't be able to click on anything else, I couldn't click any other application I couldn't shut down the PC nothing worked. I could use Alt+ tab to switch Windows or basically use the keyboard to tab my way to what I want pushed but the mouse would work. At first I thought it was a mouse so I switched and nothing changed. here's a list of the things I have done to try to fix the issue: entered safe mode and it seems to be working normal, reinstall mouse drivers, sfc /scan now, with DISM scanhealth and scanrestore, ran full malware check (100%), crystal disk info shows all three of my drives are healthy, tried different USB ports, removed previous windows updates, reinstalled my AMD GPU drivers, I have tons of storage but I removed programs that I don't use in order to see if anything would fix the issues especially the most recent programs and nothing. I keep my PC maintained very clean I have no hardware issues I know of. This problem is very difficult to explain, it's difficult to explain exactly how it is affecting my PC it's just strange and I want to avoid a fresh install. If I wouldn't be playing a video game and this problem starts to happen I can continue playing the game with no issues but once I'm done I'm back to not being able to using the PC to do anything else. One weird thing that I didn't notice is that if I spam the mouse buttons left and right click long enough on top of the application that I want to use it will eventually allow me to start using it with some caveats. I need help please.

    Hello, steve S

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A

Thank you for your detailed description. I noticed that you are normal in safe mode. Here are some troubleshooting solutions:

    Method 1:

    Update Windows.

    User's image

    July 8, 2025—KB5062553 (OS Build 26100.4652) - Microsoft Support

    2. Screen Overlay/Overlay Software (Overlays): These programs draw a transparent or semi-transparent layer on the screen, which can “steal” your mouse clicks.

    Discord Overlay

    NVIDIA GeForce Experience In-Game Overlay

    Steam Overlay

MSI Afterburner / RivaTuner Statistics Server (this is extremely common)

Any game recording software (e.g., OBS, Fraps) or performance monitoring software.

    Mouse/keyboard customization software:

    Logitech G Hub

    Razer Synapse

    Corsair iCUE

    • Any software used to customize mouse macros, lighting, or DPI. These programs may occasionally have bugs that cause input confusion. “Ghost” windows:

There may be a crashed application that hasn't fully closed, leaving an invisible window on the screen. This transparent window sits above all other windows and captures all mouse clicks.

When the issue occurs, try pressing Alt + Tab and carefully check the list of windows to see if there is a blank window with no icon or an unusual name. If so, try switching to it and closing it with Alt + F4.

You can also open Task Manager (using Ctrl + Shift + Esc) when the issue occurs and look for suspicious or unresponsive applications under the “Processes” tab.

    3. Create a new local account

Search for CMD in the search bar, select Run as administrator, and enter the following commands one by one:

    • net user USERNAME PASSWORD /add

After the command is successfully executed, enter the following command:

    • net localgroup administrators USERNAME /add

Note: Replace USERNAME PASSWORD with the account name and password you want. If you don't need a password, leave PASSWORD blank.

    4. Try using Update Repair.

Open Settings, System, Recovery, and select Use Update Repair.

If none of the above methods work, we recommend reinstalling Windows using a USB installation medium. Back up your important data before doing this.

Reinstall Windows with the installation media - Microsoft Support

I look forward to your feedback.

    Best Regards,
