I found that I can manually open files in teams in apps like Excel, but for some reason the options for default are not the same as what I have seen in videos online. On mine it does not list Open in App as an option. Is this a seeting issue that can be corrected?

    Hi Will:

The ability to change the default app used to open Office files is available to all users by default. There are no admin controls or policies to disable this feature.

However, you must be enabled the public preview client.

You can see more details in:

I hope that the information gives to you will be useful to your purposes, please let me know about the result, because other users with the same problem will know what to do.

    Greetings.

There are no updates needed at this time for windows, teams or office and I keep up with those on a regular basis. None of the files are set to read only.

The file in question is a Microsoft Excel document. Although I have the ability to open it in app if I select that option everytime which can get old. The option to set Open in App as default is not availible. The reason it is important to open it in app is because there are features that are not available such as macros that can't be used in browser, sharepoint or teams. I have other team members that I would like to be able use this file but it would be nice if I didn't have to teach them how to open it in app and just set it as default.

Also thank you for responding so quickly.

I wonder if maybe the reason it is not available is because of some sort of admin setting against it.

Hi , I'm Sergio, it's a pleasure to help you.

First, you should select the file.

Note: Only Office files can be edited within Teams.

Depending on the file type, you’ll see the some of the following buttons in the top right of the Teams screen.

    • Editing: Here you can indicate whether you want to work with the file as an editor (the default) or reviewer, or simply view the file.

    • Copy Link: To share the file with others, send them the copied link.

To change who can open the file and whether they can edit or download it, select People in your organization with the link can edit and make your choices.

    • Catch up: Here you can view changes that others have made since you last viewed the file.

    • Conversation: This will show you the chat or channel thread inside Teams that relates to the file.

    • More options: Here you can choose to open the file in its web app or download it.

    • Close: This will close the file and take you back to where you were in Teams when you first opened the file.

If the problem still, then you should isolate the problem causes to solve it, please answer me:

    1. Are you using the last Teams update?
    2. Do you have pending Windows or Office updates to execute?
    3. Can you ensure that this file isn't a readonly file?

    Greetings.
