Missing Grades and Assignments tab

In the beginning of the year, when we created a team site, just a standard one, we were able to add to the Team Site a Grade and an Assignments tab.

Now when we go to add the Assignment or Grade option we run into the following problem:

  1. When clicking the + to add a tab, Assignments or Grades are not found in order to be added
  2. Clicking the Manage Apps button, then More apps I can find Grades but no Add button, and Assignments is not even an option

So as an administrator I can go into the Teams Admin page, then Manage Apps. There I can find both the Grades and Assignments applications. Both are Allowed, and I can then Add them to the Team Site (Note Insights is allowed as well). BUT when we go back to that Team Site, we do not see the Assignment or Grades tab, no matter how long we wait. But when I go to the Manage Apps option for the Team Site I see that they are added.

To make it even more annoying, the Assignment and Grades tab do not appear in the Windows Desktop Client, the Android Teams app, or the Web browser Teams client. But they do appear in the IPhone client for the team site.

If I create a Class Team site, the options appear, but the issue here is that the faculty cannot remove the Assignments or Grades options. So we went with the Standard Team option, and let the faculty add the options they wanted.

Any ideas why the Assignments and Grades options are not an option anymore for Standard Teams, or if there is a way to allow them to be added again?

Hi Lionel,

We appreciate that you posted back and confirmed the scenario with us, we also appreciate that you spent your precious time doing those tests.

We have checked your description carefully, and it seems that some faculty don’t want to use Assignments and Grades tabs in team, so you want to create a basic team, then they can choose to add Assignments tab and Grades tab or not.

However, according to Microsoft official article, you cannot add those tabs in basic team.

If my understanding is right, as you mentioned above, Grades and Assignments tabs can be only available under Class team, we may not add those two tabs in a basic team. As shown below:

For more details, you can also refer to this article: Choose a team type to collaborate in Microsoft Teams

We have also tested it on our side, we created a class team, and we cannot find the way or option to remove those two tabs in Class team.

At the same time, we have also tested with basic team, we have also tried searched Assignment and Grades, but we cannot add them as tabs.

Given this situation, we’re sorry that it doesn’t meet your requirement, and we do understand the inconvenience caused and apologize for it. We also understand that you want to find a way to add or remove those tabs easily, to address your concern, we’d suggest you go to Microsoft Teams UserVoice to provide your feedback. This is the best platform to let us hear from you and make our products and services better for you and others.

At the same time, for original post concern about “Now when we go to add the Assignment or Grade option we run into the following problem”, we have also tested it on our side, we went to basic team > added a tab > we can search Grades but we cannot find Assignments, as shown below:

We can also reproduce the same situation as yours.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

Best Regards,

Sukie

We are an educational institution so we have the Microsoft Educational 365 licenses.

The concern was that some faculty do not want ALL the features of a class teams site, and since they cannot remove the features from a class teams site. For example if they do not want to use the Grades option they cannot remove that, and they then have to explain to students why they do not see anything when they click on the Grades feature. Likewise the Assignments feature. If the feature is not going to be used, then the faculty should be able to remove it so it is not there for students to get distracted by or annoyed by.

The answer for the last few semesters was to create a basic teams site and let them add the Assignments and Grades features if they wanted. Which faculty was able to add to their basic team sites without issues in the past.

But reading over things it looks like Microsoft has decided to only allow Assignments and Grades in class teams sites, so I will have to build out our team sites with that, and tell the faculty they cannot remove the features they do not want students to see or use.

Although it is still odd that it does appear that you can add some of the features to a basic team site, but they do not actually appear unless you are on an iPhone.

    Hello Lionel,

    Thanks for choosing Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, it seems you already have tested lots of thing try to add it. Nevertheless, according to our knowledge and experience, it is only available to use in assignments and grades tab in class team. Which is not available to use it in Microsoft 365 Business standard teams and other kind of teams. Grades and assignments tab are normally using for Teams Education.

As a workaround, you can use Microsoft excel manually to make the assignments and grades in Standard Teams.

    Kind Regards,

    Tommy
