I was able to get the conversation history back by signing out off Teams (right-click the Systray icon), closing it, relaunching and signing in again.

May I know whether you are using Teams Web app or Teams desktop client on your laptop?
Does this issue happen on both Teams Web App and Teams desktop client?
If you are using Teams desktop client, please make sure that app is latest updated. See Update Microsoft Teams
Please try to quit Teams desktop app by right-clicking the Teams icon in the taskbar and choosing Quit then relaunching to check this issue.
You may try to check this issue via using different Laptop/PC (e.g. any non-problematic colleagues Pc) to see whether it is specific client side issue.
Moreover, please provide us with detailed screenshot about the issue via the Private Message for further analysis.

I had the same problem starting last week (around 4/25).

I have the same issue since April 26th,
I'm using the Mac desktop App, I quit it and restarted it multiple times, I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it and same problem. I'm in several 'teams' and some have multiple channels but I get the same 'Welcome to the team' message when I know there are some messages to display.
Version of teams is 1.2.00.8866
It seems that the problem is coming from the app, the browser mode works fine. One of my colleague who has a mac doesn't have the same problem. I'm on Mac OS 10.14.4, he's on Mac OS 10.14.3, same version of Teams
