Co-editing using Excel App through Microsoft Teams

My group uses Microsoft Teams for files. I know it is possible to collaborate on Excel using Onedrive and Sharepoint. Is there a way to co-edit in Excel using the desktop app instead of Online/Teams.  When I try using the app, it shows as "read-only". The online versions don't allow for essential shortcuts and features that we use.

    Hi Mario,

To co-author in Excel for Windows desktops, you need to make sure certain things are set up before you start.

To co-author a workbook, users must have:

    1. An Office 365 subscription.
    2. The latest version of Excel for Office 365 installed.
    3. Must sign into Office with your subscription account.
    4. You need to use the Excel Workbooks in .xlsx file format. If your file isn’t in this format, open the file and then click File > Save As > Browse > Save as type. Change the format to (*.xlsx). Please note that co-authoring does not support the Strict Open XML Spreadsheet format.

For detailed information, see Collaborate on Excel workbooks with co-authoring

If you are opening the workbook directly in desktop app from Microsoft Teams, go to Files tab, click the ellipses and select Open in Desktop app, as shown below.

As you mentioned, “When I try using the app, it shows as "read-only"”, please provide us with the following information:

    1. Please describe the steps you’ve taken to open the workbook in Excel desktop application.
    2. Provide the screenshot of Office 365 Product Information. To get this screenshot, open any Office app such as Word or Excel on your computer, click File>Account, capture the screenshot of all the information mentioned under Product Information.
    3. What is the file format of the workbook? Is it .xlsx or .xlsm etc.?
    4. Does all the Excel workbook open in read-only? Try opening another workbook and check if the behavior is different.

    Thanks,

    Neha
