According to your description, it seems that the student is added as a guest in your organization by using the Azure portal. In general, the user will receive an invitation email. I'd like to confirm whether the student select Accept invitation in the email and then log into Teams.
From the error message you provided, I suggest you contact your Microsoft 365 admin or Azure AD admin to help you remove the user from the user list in Azure AD admin center and re-add it again by following the steps in this article: Add a new guest user in Azure AD.
In addition, may I know whether the user is using Teams Web App? If so, you can also try downloading Teams client via this link and then sign in to check whether the same issue occurred.
