Breakout Rooms in Teams - what if people leave the meeting?

Hi all,

We've been experiencing some confusion with how elements of breakout rooms are supposed to work if certain people leave and rejoin. If anyone is able to clarify what should happen in these scenarios, that would be super:

  1. If a meeting participant drops off a meeting and re-joins, do they rejoin into their breakout room, or the main room? We've had a scenario where someone wasn't able to get back in at all - we'd like to just know where they SHOULD end up.
  2. If the Meeting Organiser accidentally leaves the meeting (e.g. due to poor connection or hardware issues), do the breakout rooms they had opened continue running? We've had a situation where this happened and when the organiser rejoined, they couldn't see any rooms at all.

Thanks

    Hi

My name is Daniel. I am an Independent Advisor.

If participants drop-off a breakout room, then, please follow these steps below to enable the participants to rejoin the breakout room again.

    Option 1.

    • Please go to the breakout room > select show participants
    • Under the "Others from chat" section, Do you see the participants listed there? If yes then please click the "request to join" button. If not then please continue to option 2 below. Image

    Option 2.

    • Please go to the main meeting room.
    • Under the room name  > select (...) next to a participant name >  ask to join. Image

Once you have sent the request to join, the participants will receive a pop-up window on their end.  It's up to them to accept or reject your request.

    Kind Regards

    Answering your questions:

    1. f you set the option breakout room settings you will Allow students to return to main meeting

By default, this setting will be off. To turn it on, switch the toggle next to Participants can return to the main meeting to on.

This will allow students to leave their breakout rooms and return to the original meeting to rejoin the larger discussion.
