Teams Chat 'Unknown Users'

My calendar was not syncing on the desktop Teams app, despite refreshing and clearing Teams caches, until I uninstalled the Teams app and re-installed. Now, the calendar syncs but the Chat show the vast majority of users as "Unknown:". When I go into each individual chat, the names are there, but in the list of chats the vast majority are listed as "Unknown User" even though they aren't unknown users.

The same thing appears in the web-app of Teams, but with different people listed as Unknown User than the desktop app.

Hi Jonathan,

can you confirm if you do the same steps for clearing cache

  1. Sign out in your Microsoft Teams desktop app.

2.Quit Microsoft Teams. Right-click the icon and select Quit.

  1. Cut and paste %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams into File Explorer.
  2. Delete the contents of the entire folder.
  3. Restart Microsoft Teams

follow up question how about your fellow users, are they experiencing the same issue?

Regie S

This did not work for me. I have cleared Local and Roaming Teams folders, uninstalled/reinstalled. 90% of my Chats display "Unknown"

I tried this and still failing.

My case is actually that I created a new outlook account and used it to log in to a newly installed Teams Application. I can search my colleagues account but they can't find me by searching.

When I chat them, they see me as "unknown user".

I have tried this workaround deleting the contents of the directories and re-starting the application, but the issue still persists. I have tried also logging in with web Teams (instead of via desktop apps), but after successfully log in, it said that "You're not on Teams yet, but you can set it up for your organization." which is weird since I managed to login using the 'non-existing account'

I have tried to delete the cache many times, should I try to re-install the application? will it work?

That worked, thanks a million! When I cleared the cache before, to fix the calendar syncing it only had me delete the contents of certain folders, not all of them. All looks good now. Microsoft for the win! (and thank goodness for independent advisors too of course!)
