Very slow performance editing document from Microsoft Teams

  • We create a new excel wookbook with some random info in and protect a few cells with a password.
  • Save this to a channel in teams.
  • We then log out and back in and view the document online in Microsoft teams (nice and fast).
  • We then try to edit it using our onprem office 2016 pro excel program. This takes 30 ish seconds to download a 14.5kb file and open it with our on prem excel.

We are on a 20 mb leased line and only 2mb in use at the time of testing so no issue with the connection.

We are also using the E1 subscription of Office365 FYI.

If we manually save the file locally and open it with on prem it loads instantly.

Also later that same day the access to the Microsoft excel file in question resolved itself and returned to a very quick access within a couple of seconds. The only thing I can think of maybe the Microsoft network was under load.

You cannot do that with excel online because it does not have the protected cells options available, it has been removed.

    Hi Paul-Cope-Sunfield,

Thanks for your post, I understand that you thought it is slow when you want edit an excel in Teams channel by using local excel app.

It is a normal phenomenon in this situation, when you want to edit an online excel in teams by using local app. It need connect to server and loading configuration, so it need more time.

If you want to edit it quickly, you can try to edit in online model.

    Thanks for understanding.

    Richard
