in Word cannot create document with multilevel list that works. At end of a sentence hitting Enter does not create a properly formatted next entry. Cannot a new item with a subordinate level

In Word, the recommended approach is to set up multilevel numbering so that it is associated with paragraph styles—one style per list level. See https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html (applies to Word 2007 and later, up to and including Word 2024 and subscription versions).

With heading numbering, keep in mind that pressing Enter at the end of heading usually applies Normal style to text. To "continue" the list, you will have to manually apply a heading style to the new text paragraph. Or you can change the "Style for following paragraph" by modifying the heading style. In those cases, choose "Heading 1" as the "Style for following paragraph" for Heading 1, etc.

    Hi David,

I'm Cherrelyn, and I’m here to help.

    Please try these suggestion:

    1. Highlight your list and go to Home > Multilevel List > Define New Multilevel List.
    2. Link each level to the appropriate Heading style (e.g., Level 1 = Heading 1, Level 2 = Heading 2).
    3. Press Enter to create a new item, and Tab to create a sublevel.

This should help Word recognize your structure and apply formatting correctly.

I hope this will help and If you have any question please don't hesitate to leave a comment.

    Warm regards,

    Cherrelyn
