Files open in a pop-up web browser instead of opening in teams, only on first click. The Second click opens the file in teams.

So when I open the onedrive tab(formerly 'files'), I click a file I've been working on in the recent files list. I click directly on the name of the file (not the same line, but directly on the text. When I click that file, the file opens in a web browser, despite my settings which say files will be opened in teams.

The odd part is that if I click the exact same thing, it will open in teams on that second attempt. It seems to reset within minutes as I have clicked the same file 5-10 times so far today and every time it will first open in a browser, then on second click it will open in teams. How do I prevent this discrepancy and ensure a consistent experience when clicking on files in the onedrive subsection of teams?

Here are my settings:

Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Teams for business | Files | Access OneDrive files

    Hello Bradley,

I'm Ibhadighi and I'd happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself.

The behavior you're experiencing, where files open in a web browser first despite the settings in Teams indicating otherwise, could be due to a few reasons, such as a temporary glitch, cache issue, or an application conflict. Here's a simplified approach to address this issue:

    1. Clear Teams Cache:
      • Exit Microsoft Teams.
      • Open the File Explorer.
      • Type %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams in the address bar.
      • Delete the contents of the Cache folder.
      • Restart Teams and check if the issue persists.
    2. Ensure that your Teams application is up to date, as updates can fix bugs and improve functionality.
    3. Re-apply Settings:
      • Try toggling the file open preference setting to a different option, then back to 'Teams' again.
      • Save the settings and restart Teams to see if it now consistently opens files in Teams.
    4. If the issue continues, please consider uninstalling and then reinstalling the Microsoft Teams application.

It's important to note that Teams settings should normally dictate how files are opened. If it's not behaving as expected, it may require intervention directly from Microsoft's technical support team https://support.microsoft.com/contactus to resolve the issue.

Please remember that I am a User just like you on this forum and do not have access to Microsoft's database.

    I hope this helps,

    Best Regards, Ibhadighi

Hey Ibhadighi, thanks for taking the time to guide me through some potential solutions! I've tried 1, 2, and 3 but unfortunately it is still opening links in browser on first click and then in teams on the second. I'll have to get our IT team to reinstall teams as I don't have permissions but I'm sure that will solve it, a fresh installation usually solves these odd bugs.

    Thanks again for your help,

    Bradley

    Jan 18 2024 Update:

Unfortunately none of the suggestions made a difference, I asked IT to come reinstall teams and I sat there watching them do so. Upon fresh installation, there is the same bug with new teams. It appears to be inherent to the 'new teams' program unfortunately. I hope they fix it in a future patch.
