SharePoint Permissions not Syncing with Private Channel Membership

We are having some issues with SharePoint permissions not automatically updating when adding a user to a private channel. It seems like a bug with the service. However, I submitted a ticket to Microsoft over 2 weeks ago and have not heard back, so I thought I would check here to see if anyone has any ideas on how to resolve this.

Here are a couple of examples:

  • "Susie" was added as an owner to a private channel in Team B. However, the user was only added as site member to the channel's associated SharePoint site, not a site owner as you would expect.
  • "Joe" was added as a member to a private channel in Team B. However, the user was not given any permissions at all to the channel's associated SharePoint site.

These are a few examples. However, we have tested numerous users on numerous channels, and although the issue isn't consistent, it does appear to be happening across the board with different users and channels.

Has this happened to other people and if so, how did you resolve it?

    Dear Lexi Nickens,

Thank you for posting your query in our community.

I understand your concern and would like to convey that

    1. the Private channel members must be a member of the parent M365 Group/Team. Please check the affected users’ membership on the parent Team.
    2. If that doesn’t work to you, kindly remove the users from the ownership/membership. Restart Teams and re-add them.
    3. As a workaround, sharepoint can add members from SharePoint admin center >> Active sites >> find the parent site >> click “channel sites” >> click “Membership” to manage it.

Thank you for your time and we wish you have a lovely day.

    Yours sincerely,

    Hi Sophia,

Thanks for the response. All of these users are members of the overarching team - it wouldn't let me add them to the private channel if they weren't. Also, this issue is happening even when people are added to private channels via the admin portal, so it is not an issue with the Teams app.

I am aware of the workaround, which is what we have been doing while this issue persists. However, this is less than ideal, and it is very frustrating that this feature is not working properly.

    Best,

    Lexi

    Dear Lexi Nickens,

Thank you for posting your query in our community.

Thank you for the details provided. SharePoint uses permissions to control user access on the site. If adding from SharePoint in the admin center still doesn't work, it may not be related to the team app, but rather to a problem with the permissions on the private site.

but because it's a private channel linked site, the permissions on the site are all set from the backend and users do not have permission to customize from the user end.

So in this case I'm afraid you need to check the permission with the backend team, if the permission is set correctly from the backend they will able to fix it.

If you are the Microsoft 365 admin of your organization, you can sign in to Microsoft 365 admin center with your Microsoft 365 admin account, and select Support > Help and support, enter your question and select Contact support. Otherwise, please refer to How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin?

Note: We apologize for redirecting you to related suport team because the moderators in this community are limited with the resource for further investigation and to get a quick resolution to your problem, we requested it.

We are experiencing the same issue on a few of our Teams as well. When a Private Channel is created the initial owner is correctly added to the corresponding SharePoint site, but any further members who are added to the Private Channel they are not added to the SharePoint site. It doesn't matter if they are Owners or Members of the Private Channel, their permissions are never added to the SharePoint site even if the user is an M365 administrator.

I've tested from the Team app and the Teams Admin Portal and the issue persists across both methodologies.

Were you able to determine the cause of this issue?

I'm having the same exact issue - I can't add another owner to the private SharePoint site by updating the owner group within the Teams app/Private Teams channel. The additional owner shows up in the Teams channel, but it does not replicate to the private SharePoint site.
