Hi, Muhammad Ahmad,
Welcome to the Microsoft community.
According to your details, to better understand your issue, please provide the following details:
- Are you using a Personal or Business or Education account ?
- Are you end-user or Admin user?
Here’s a step-by-step guide based on the most reliable methods:
Recover Files from a Teams Channel
Files shared in Teams channels are stored in the associated SharePoint site. If a file was deleted, it’s likely in the SharePoint Recycle Bin, which retains deleted items for up to 93 days.
- Steps to recover:
- Open Microsoft Teams and navigate to the team and channel where the file was located.
- Click the Files tab at the top of the channel.
- Click Open in SharePoint (you may need to click the three-dot menu to see this option).
- In SharePoint, sign in with your Microsoft account if prompted.
- On the left navigation pane, click Recycle Bin.
- Locate the deleted file or picture in the list. You can sort by deletion date to find it faster.
- Select the file by clicking the circle next to it, then click Restore. The file will return to its original folder in the SharePoint site.
- Return to Teams, refresh the Files tab (click the refresh icon), and verify the file is back.
- Remember:
- Any team member with access to the SharePoint site can recover files from the first stage Recycle Bin.
- If the file isn’t in the first-stage Recycle Bin (e.g., it was deleted from there or more than 30 days have passed), check the Second-Stage Recycle Bin (site collection Recycle Bin). This requires site collection administrator permissions. If you’re not an admin, contact your IT department.
- If the file was deleted more than 93 days ago, it’s likely permanently deleted unless your organization has a third-party backup solution like SysCloud or Commvault

Recover files from chats (Stored in OneDrive):
- If the data was deleted from a chat, open Microsoft Teams and go to the Chat section.
- Find the relevant chat, check for the deleted file, and see if editing the message allows reattachment (applicable for recent deletions).
- Alternatively, go to OneDrive (web or app), navigate to the Microsoft Teams Chat Files folder, and check the Recycle Bin for deleted files. Select and restore as needed.
Verify permissions:
- Ensure you have edit permissions for the team or SharePoint site. If not, contact the team owner or Microsoft 365 administrator.
- For OneDrive, you need access to the account where the chat files were stored.
Check retention period:
- Files are typically retained for 93 days in the first-stage Recycle Bin and another 93 days in the second-stage (up to 186 days total). If the data is "old" and beyond this period, recovery may not be possible without backups.
Contact support or IT:
- If files are not in the Recycle Bin or you lack permissions, contact your organization’s IT department or Microsoft Support.
- Provide details like the team/channel, deletion date, and your account type (Microsoft 365 Business).
