Microsoft Teams and Proxy configuration

Hi everyone,

Since some times, we are encountering an annoyance with Teams, this is not a problem because it's still working after closing the proxy login request windows.

Let me explain it completely :-)

So, our network team did implement the complete bypass for all Microsoft Application with automatic rules inside our firewall (These rules are automatically verified multiple times in a day to ensure we've the correct list of Microsoft servers to bypass.) and our clients uses these rules. This is working since 4-5 years ...

Inside the client system (W10 at this time of writing), we use a proxy.pac file which does contains all direct return for case where dns domain is from Microsoft.com, office.com, ... So for the client with that proxy.pac, if you go to teams.microsoft.com, you go directly bypassing the proxy. And so, no proxy configured.

I'm working from home, without problems, without VPN. And as soon as I'm starting the VPN (which does also contains specific routes to bypass the VPN tunnel for Microsoft tools, apps, ... ), I'm receiving the popup request to log into my proxy for the Teams application, 3 times as soon as the VPN tunnel is created.

.

So my simple questions are:

  • does anyone else already encountered a strange behavior like this ?
  • Is there any settings (registry, ... anything) that can help enforce Teams to fully bypass proxy configuration ?

Thanks for your time, and if you may help us, that would be wonderful !

Enjoy your day.

Regards

Fabien

    Hello

I’m Adeyemi and I’d be happy to help you with your question.

The issue you're experiencing with Microsoft Teams and proxy configuration is a known one

Microsoft recommends bypassing proxies, VPNs, and network security devices (such as SSL inspection) for Teams traffic. This is because these devices can introduce latency and packet loss, which is detrimental to Teams' performance

However, if bypassing the proxy is not an option, there are a few things you can try:

    1. Check Your Proxy Settings: Make sure your proxy settings are correctly configured to allow Teams to connect directly. This might involve modifying your PAC file or firewall rules
    2. Use a VPN Split Tunnel: If you're using a VPN, consider setting up a split tunnel for Teams traffic. This allows Teams traffic to bypass the VPN and connect directly to Microsoft's servers

Here is a helpful reference for you https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/proxy-servers-for-skype-for-business-online.

    I hope this helps

    Hi Adeyemi,

Sorry if that was not clear in my question, but we already have installed a bypass for the VPN for all traffic from Teams, by splitting all traffics and redirecting all Microsoft traffic in direct connection thru the internet of the user at home.

The proxy settings are correctly set within the proxy.pac file to allow a direct connection for ALL Microsoft tools, apps, ... as recommended by Microsoft ! Only internal apps are redirected thru the VPN tunnel to allow access to these specific apps.

    Regards

I understand that you've already implemented a bypass for the VPN for all Teams traffic and correctly set the proxy settings within the proxy.pac file. However, if you're still experiencing issues with Teams prompting for proxy login, it might be due to some other factors.

Here are a few more things you can try:

    1. Check Teams Settings: Make sure that Teams is configured to use the system proxy settings. You can check this in the Teams desktop client by going to Settings > Network > Proxy settings.
    2. Disable Automatic Detect Settings: In some cases, disabling the "Automatically detect settings" option in your internet settings can resolve this issue. You can find this option in Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings.

Remember, it's always important to keep your software up-to-date and to report any issues you encounter so they can be addressed in future updates.

    Hi Adeyemi,

We have a similar problem for one user in our organsation.

I am keen to try your solution but I dont seem to have a network section under teams settings in the desktop app ?

My desktop app version is 1.6.00.27573 (64-bit)

Am I missing something here or mis understanding your suggestion ?

I look forward to hearing from you.
